It's especially bad when it's working sims like bartenders that just take off (another bartender does show up eventually but it's still a nuisance that they keep leaving in the first place).

People discuss it a fair amount on the Nraas forums, and from what I remember, it can be due to any number of issues overworking the game engine. But Error Trap can help with at least some of that.
